Refutes the Malthusian claim that population presses on subsistence, which shuts off the second standard explanation of poverty.

George examines the Malthusian theory, which supports the wage-fund doctrine by blaming poverty on population growth. He argues that its analogies and historical examples fail, and that facts show larger populations produce more wealth per person. Having cleared away both explanations, he leaves the cause of poverty amid advancing wealth still to be found.
